With the increase and expansion of the various Rotary zones, our district has changed its name several times:
East Mediterranean District upon its creation in 1929, then District D
As of July 1st, 1935, our district was successively: District 83 in 1936, District 89 in 1949, District 195 in 1957.
On July 1st, 1977, it became District 245 and in 1991, District 2450. In September 2011, Rotary International decided to redraw its boundaries, separating Egypt into a distinct district and giving our district the name District 2452.
A District with Variable Geometry
In 1929, Egypt, and soon after Palestine, were the first two countries in the region to join Rotary International. In 1932, Lebanon joined, followed by Syria in 1937, and then Sudan and Cyprus in 1938.
The year 1951 saw the departure of Palestine, 1956 the accession of Jordan, 1965 the withdrawal of Syria and the accession of Bahrain.
After about thirty years of calm, Armenia joined in November 1996, Georgia in December 1997, Dubai in March 2002, and Palestine in May 2010.
Our district thus brings together 9 countries across 3 continents—Europe, Asia, Africa—with six spoken languages: English, Arabic, Armenian, French, Greek, and Georgian. Here are its main characteristics:
